Summer wardrobe essentials
and how to wear them
Summer is finally here, YIPPY! And while I love and appreciate the beautiful, trendy clothes of summer, you’ll usually find me in a basic tank and jean shorts because they’re effortless and functional, and move with me when I’m running after the kids, doing laundry, and prepping meals.
But the same look day-after-day gets boring, so I connected with my friend Suzanne Colmer, owner of Image & Style Consultant Agency ‘Your Shop Girl’, to put together some fresh new looks from my existing wardrobe, that are not just effortless and functional, but fashionable too! Here are Suzanne's top summer wardrobe essentials, and examples of how you can wear each one. |
kimono
Kimono's are the best layering piece for summer. They allow you to add a third piece to your look, and help you look more 'put together'. They also shield you from the sun and they multitask as a beach coverup and a scarf when wrapped around your neck.
How to wear: Over jean shorts and a tank Over a long dress or jumpsuit Over a t-shirt dress with cute sneakers Tip: Don't own a kimono? Make one with a scarf and two knots. Click here to Learn how. |
tank
With varying straps for varying styles, tanks can be worn and layered all year long. Available in neutral colours and bold hues alike, tanks are incredibly versatile and therefore, a summer wardrobe essential.

Linen romper or jumpsuit
Linen is super absorbent (all my tea towels are linen!) and a great conductor of heat which makes it the perfect summer fabric. Combine that with a style of clothing that barely touches your skin and you have the perfect summer one and done outfit.
How to wear: With a wedge or block heel sandal With a denim jacket With flats |
jean shorts
This season jeans shorts come in all shapes and sizes. From super cheeky distressed to tight Bermuda shorts, there is no excuse not to wear them! If you are buying online make sure to check the inseam to confirm it hits exactly where you want it to.
Tip: For camouflaging the tummy area, avoid whiskers around the zipper and look for distressing or details that draw the eye to leg or booty |
nude shoe
If you are only going to own one pair of shoes, they should be nude. Nude goes with everything, but because nude is different for everyone, you want to look for the colour that matches your skin, to the point they almost blend in with your feet. Jenny's nude shoes actually have a pink tone, because she has a lot of pink in her skin. You can see how well they blend in with her feet in the picture of her in the denim button down below.

button down
Button downs are one of the most versatile pieces in people's closets. They can be worn on their own, layered over many different outfits, and can replace a jean jacket on a super hot day. Even if you have a larger chest and are exclusively wearing them open, they are a great piece to own.
How to wear: Closed and tucked fully or partially into jeans Tied over a tank Open over a dress |
